SS: Poverty, basically. It was determined by what neighborhood you lived in. Anyone in the Tenderloin qualified. So, activists were doing organizing specifically with transgender people from the Tenderloin and this group called Conversion Our Goal (COG) got started. A bunch of tranny prostitutes got together and said, “Hey, the only reason we’re tricking is because we can’t get jobs. If you want to ‘abate crime’ and ‘end poverty’ then you have to get us access to hormones, surgery, legal name and gender changes, and civil rights, to keep us from getting busted every time we need to piss in a public restroom! We need you to get the police off our backs and get us trained for jobs because we’re severely discriminated against.”

Ironically enough, the California Assembly member who helped sponsor and push through a lot of bills decriminalizing homosexuality and allowing transsexuals to change their I.D.’s was Willie Brown!
